Start with the part, not the brochure
Define the largest and smallest parts, materials, tolerance, finish, annual quantity, setup frequency and inspection method. A machine that looks impressive may be a poor fit if it creates excessive setup time, cannot hold the needed tooling, or lacks local support.
Verify the complete system
The useful machine is the machine plus control, options, workholding, tooling, coolant or extraction, metrology, software, postprocessor, training, power, air and service. Missing pieces can cost more than the apparent discount.
Document before committing
Record the exact model, serial number, control version, option list, spindle and taper, axis travels, table or chuck capacity, electrical requirements, machine weight, included tooling and known defects. Save listing photographs and seller statements.
Define the feature
For pocket milling, document geometry, tolerance, finish, datum structure, stock condition, tool access and inspection method before selecting a toolpath.
Plan the setup
Check workholding, tool reach, holder clearance, chip evacuation, coolant direction and the sequence of roughing, semi-finishing and finishing operations.
Prove out deliberately
Use simulation and controlled machine prove-out. Verify the active work offset, tool, length and diameter data, spindle direction, coolant, safe approach and expected remaining stock.
Compare complete descriptions, photographs, included tooling, freight terms, control condition, and seller history. A listing title is not an inspection report.
