Simulation reduces risk but does not replace machine-specific prove-out, guarding, correct offsets, setup verification or operator supervision.

Start with the part, not the brochure

Define the largest and smallest parts, materials, tolerance, finish, annual quantity, setup frequency and inspection method. A machine that looks impressive may be a poor fit if it creates excessive setup time, cannot hold the needed tooling, or lacks local support.

Verify the complete system

The useful machine is the machine plus control, options, workholding, tooling, coolant or extraction, metrology, software, postprocessor, training, power, air and service. Missing pieces can cost more than the apparent discount.

Document before committing

Record the exact model, serial number, control version, option list, spindle and taper, axis travels, table or chuck capacity, electrical requirements, machine weight, included tooling and known defects. Save listing photographs and seller statements.

Machine-aware programming

FreeCAD Path Workbench should be evaluated with your machine kinematics, control, postprocessor, tool library and verification process. A generic toolpath is not the same as safe, valid code for a specific machine.

Postprocessor validation

Validate posts with controlled test programs and documented procedures. Review work offsets, units, planes, tool changes, spindle commands, coolant, canned cycles, rotary motion and safe retract behavior before production use.

Data management

Keep controlled versions of CAD, CAM, posts, setup sheets, tool libraries and released NC files. Backups should be recoverable without depending on one computer or one employee.

Marketplace research

Compare complete descriptions, photographs, included tooling, freight terms, control condition, and seller history. A listing title is not an inspection report.
